“BEWARE OF JACOB’S PORRIDGE”
⏰Saturday of the Thirteenth Week of Ordinary Time 1 (08 July 2017)
????Gen 27:1-5, 15-29; Ps 135:1b-2, 3-4, 5-6 (R.v.3a); Matt 9:14-17
In Gen 25:29-34, out of the desire to temporarily satisfy his hunger, and possibly, his ‘longer throat,’ Esau made an oath transferring his birthright as the firstborn to Jacob in exchange for a plate of porridge. To Esau, that was not a serious action (cf. Gen 25:32, 34), but that provided the ground for what happened in Gen 27:1ff, not minding that it was destined so even before their birth (cf. Gen 25:23).
That Jacob’s porridge still exists in many forms today:
????When we collect gifts from politicians saying that we would still vote whoever we want. Sometimes, that collection creates a pact with the devil and affects the person who fails to keep his part of the bargain.
????When we receive bribes to cover the truth and give room to injustice; nemesis is a reality.
????When out of little juicy favour that we want to receive from ‘big people’, we lost our ground to speak the truth to them.
Sometimes, we think that without selling ourselves out in those forms, we shall not make ends meet. But that is not true. Jesus Christ, the bridegroom (cf. Matt 9:15) is still very much in our midst to provide for all our needs. All we need is to trust him and be patient with him as he unfolds his good plans for us.
May the Lord never allow us to be put to shame as we place all our hope in him. Amen.
Kindly pray for the deacons of the Catholic Diocese of Nnewi who would be ordained Catholic priests today. May they be fearless and selfless witnesses to the Gospel. Amen.
I wish you a happy ans memorable weekend. Peace be with you.
Amen
