🎤FOLLOW JESUS, THE WAY, NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS
Most of the books of the New Testament were written to address different theological concerns. Obviously, there were many of such concerns in the Gospel of John but central among them is faith in Jesus Christ as one who is the same with God the Father. There were other minor concerns but all of them center around that want of proof for the divinity of Jesus.
Consider the last part of the Gospel in that light (John 21:20-25). The obvious concern here is the nature of Parousia (the second coming of Jesus). People had understood that Jesus was coming back VERY soon and that his disciples would not die before he came back (see Matt 24:34).
To add to the already huge confusion, the beloved disciple of Jesus, John also died and this made many people to stop following the Way. That was indeed a big distraction.
Jesus had earlier taught them to believe in God and also believe in him. But now, other things are taking their minds off track.
The evangelist therefore tried to correct that with that response of Jesus to Peter, “If it is my will that he remains until I come, what is that to you? FOLLOW ME!” (John 20:22)
Is it not true that many things distract us from following Jesus faithfully today? Most of these are difficulties especially in matters of our faith. They could come in the form of loss of a dear one, shake up in business, betrayal, etc. St Paul found himself in one of such difficulties but stood firm (cf. Acts 28:16-20).
When these come, remember that God’s love is bigger than all your problems. Follow him no matter what happens. He is in charge.
As you make effort to follow Jesus, may he always lead you into great and green pastures. Amen.
Have a beautiful weekend under the watchful care of the risen Lord, Jesus and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Peace be with you dear.
